Are We Ministers of Righteousness?

Are We Ministers of Righteousness?

6/28/2017

As the ministers of Christ and servants of righteousness, we speak the truth in the sight of God. Like Paul, we are given a dispensation to preach the eternal gospel, and stand not in the place of honor to be worshipped and recognized by men.

Rather, as Christ's ministers and ambassadors of heaven and the rule of God's kingdom on the earth, we command all men to repent and live lives worthy of this gospel which we have received.

Consider the following scriptures:

EPHESIANS 4:14-16

4 As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received. 2 Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. 3 Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. 4 There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to one hope when you were called; 5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism; 6 one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.

7 But to each one of us grace has been given as Christ apportioned it. 8 This is why it says:

‘When he ascended on high, he took many captives and gave gifts to his people.’ 9 (What does ‘he ascended’ mean except that he also descended to the lower, earthly regions?

10 He who descended is the very one who ascended higher than all the heavens, IN ORDER TO FILL THE WHOLE UNIVERSE.)

11 So CHRIST HIMSELF gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers,

12 to EQUIP HIS PEOPLE FOR WORKS OF SERVICE, so that the BODY OF CHRIST MAY BE BUILT UP,

13 UNTIL WE ALL REACH UNITY IN THE FAITH and IN THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE SON OF GOD AND BECOME MATURE, ATTAINING TO THE WHOLE MEASURE OF THE FULLNESS OF CHRIST.

14 That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;

15 But SPEAKING THE TRUTH IN LOVE, MAY GROW UP INTO HIM IN ALL THINGS, which is the head, even CHRIST:

16 From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplies, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, makes increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love.

2 CORINTHIANS 2

1 1 So I made up my mind that I would not make another painful visit to you. 2 For if I grieve you, who is left to make me glad but you whom I have grieved? 3 I wrote as I did, so that when I came I would not be distressed by those who should have made me rejoice. I had confidence in all of you, that you would all share my joy. 4 For I wrote to you out of great distress and anguish of heart and with many tears, not to grieve you but to let you know the depth of my love for you.

5 If anyone has caused grief, he has not so much grieved me as he has grieved all of you to some extent – not to put it too severely. 6 The punishment inflicted on him by the majority is sufficient.

7 Now instead, you ought to forgive and comfort him, so that he will not be overwhelmed by excessive sorrow. 8 I urge you, therefore, to reaffirm your love for him.

9 Another reason I wrote to you was to see if you would STAND THE TEST AND BE OBEDIENT IN EVERYTHING.

10 Anyone you forgive, I also forgive. And what I have forgiven – if there was anything to forgive – I have forgiven in the sight of Christ for your sake, 11 in order that Satan might not outwit us. For WE ARE NOT UNAWARE OF HIS SCHEMES.

12 Now when I went to Troas to preach the gospel of Christ and found that the Lord had opened a door for me, 13 I still had no peace of mind, because I did not find my brother Titus there. So I said goodbye to them and went on to Macedonia.

14 But thanks be to God, who always leads us as captives in Christ’s triumphal procession and USES US TO SPREAD THE AROMA OF THE KNOWLEDGE OF HIM EVERYWHERE. 15 For WE ARE TO GOD THE PLEASING AROMA OF CHRIST among those who are being saved and those who are perishing.

16 To the one we are an aroma that brings death; to the other, an aroma that brings life. And WHO IS EQUAL TO SUCH A TASK? 17 Unlike so many, we do not peddle the word of God for profit. On the contrary, IN CHRIST WE SPEAK BEFORE GOD WITH SINCERITY, AS THOSE SENT FROM GOD.

2 TIMOTHY 2:24-26

24 And THE LORD'S SERVANT must not be quarrelsome but must be kind to everyone, able to teach, not resentful. 25 Opponents must be gently instructed, in the hope that God will grant them repentance LEADING THEM TO A KNOWLEDGE OF THE TRUTH, 26 and that they will come to their senses and ESCAPE FROM THE TRAP OF THE DEVIL, who has taken them captive to do his will.

2 PETER 3

1 Dear friends, this is now my second letter to you. I have written both of them as reminders to stimulate you to wholesome thinking. 2 I want you to recall the words spoken in the past by the HOLY PROPHETS AND THE COMMAND GIVEN BY OUR LORD AND SAVIOUR THROUGH YOUR APOSTLES.

3 ABOVE ALL, you must understand that in the last days scoffers will come, scoffing and FOLLOWING THEIR OWN EVIL DESIRES.

4 They will say, ‘Where is this “coming” he promised? Ever since our ancestors died, everything goes on as it has since the beginning of creation.’ 5 But they deliberately forget that long ago by God’s word the heavens came into being and the earth was formed out of water and by water.

6 By these waters also the world of that time was deluged and destroyed. 7 By the same word the present heavens and earth are reserved for fire, being kept for the DAY OF JUDGMENT and DESTRUCTION OF THE UNGODLY.

8 But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: with the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day. 9 The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead HE IS PATIENT WITH YOU, NOT WANTING ANYONE TO PERISH, BUT EVERYONE TO COME TO REPENTANCE.

10 But the DAY OF THE LORD will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything done in it will be laid bare.

11 SINCE EVERYTHING WILL BE DESTROYED IN THIS WAY, WHAT KIND OF PEOPLE OUGHT YOU TO BE? YOU OUGHT TO LIVE HOLY AND GODLY LIVES 12 AS YOU LOOK FORWARD TO THE DAY OF GOD AND SPEED ITS COMING.

That day will bring about the destruction of the heavens by fire, and the elements will melt in the heat. 13 But IN KEEPING WITH HIS PROMISE WE ARE LOOKING FORWARD TO A NEW HEAVEN AND NEW EARTH, WHERE RIGHTEOUSNESS DWELLS.

14 So then, dear friends, since you are looking forward to this, MAKE EVERY EFFORT TO BE FOUND SPOTLESS, BLAMELESS, AND AT PEACE WITH HIM.

15 Bear in mind that OUR LORD'S PATIENCE MEANS SALVATION, just as our dear brother Paul also wrote to you with the wisdom that God gave him. 16 He writes the same way in all his letters, speaking in them of these matters. His letters contain some things that are hard to understand, which ignorant and unstable people distort, as they do the other Scriptures, to their own destruction.

17 Therefore, dear friends, since you have been forewarned, be on your guard so that you may not be carried away by the error of the lawless and fall from your secure position. 18 But GROW IN THE GRACE AND KNOWLEDGE OF OUR LORD AND SAVIOUR JESUS CHRIST. TO HIM BE GLORY BOTH NOW AND FOREVER! Amen.

HEBREWS 12:15-17

15 LOOKING DILIGENTLY LEST ANY MAN FAIL OF THE GRACE OF GOD; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled;

16 Lest there be any fornicator, or profane person, as Esau, who for one morsel of meat sold his birthright.

17 For you know how that afterward, when he would have inherited the blessing, he was rejected: for he found no place of repentance, though he sought it carefully with tears.

2 THESSALONIANS 1

1 Paul, Silas and Timothy, To the church of the Thessalonians in God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ: 2 Grace and peace to you from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

3 We ought ALWAYS TO THANK GOD FOR YOU, BROTHERS AND SISTERS, and rightly so, because YOUR FAITH IS GROWING MORE AND MORE, and the LOVE ALL OF YOU HAVE FOR ONE ANOTHER IS INCREASING. 4 Therefore, AMONG GOD'S CHURCHES WE BOAST ABOUT YOUR PERSEVERANCE AND FAITH in ALL THE PERSECUTIONS AND TRIALS YOU ARE ENDURING.

5 ALL THIS IS EVIDENCE THAT GOD'S JUDGMENT IS RIGHT, and AS A RESULT YOU WILL BE COUNTED WORTHY OF THE KINGDOM OF GOD, FOR WHICH YOU ARE SUFFERING.

6 God is just: He will pay back trouble to those who trouble you 7 and GIVE RELIEF TO YOU WHO ARE TROUBLED, TO US AS WELL. THIS WILL HAPPEN WHEN THE LORD JESUS IS REVEALED FROM HEAVEN IN BLAZING FIRE WITH HIS POWERFUL ANGELS.

8 He will punish THOSE WHO DO NOT KNOW GOD AND DO NOT OBEY THE GOSPEL OF OUR LORD JESUS.

9 They will be punished with everlasting destruction and shut out from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his might 10 ON THE DAY HE COMES TO BE GLORIFIED IN HIS HOLY PEOPLE AND TO BE MARVELED AT AMONG ALL THOSE WHO HAVE BELIEVED. THIS INCLUDES YOU, BECAUSE YOU BELIEVED OUR TESTIMONY TO YOU.

11 With this in mind, WE CONSTANTLY PRAY FOR YOU, THAT OUR GOD WOULD MAKE YOU WORTHY OF HIS CALLING, and that by his power he may bring to fruition YOUR EVERY DESIRE FOR GOODNESS and YOUR EVERY DEED PROMPTED BY FAITH.

12 We pray this so that the NAME OF OUR LORD JESUS MAY BE GLORIFIED IN YOU, AND YOU IN HIM, ACCORDING TO THE GRACE OF OUR GOD, AND THE LORD JESUS CHRIST.
