Are We the Heavenly Church or Worldly Church?

2/11/2016

After Jesus resurrection, He commissioned all who believe in Him to go and preach the gospel to every creature and make disciples of all nations. (Mark 16:15; Matthew 28:18-20)

Yet, in today's world, are we followers of Christ or men? Are we staying focused on our mission that Christ Himself gave us, or is our time, attention, and focus changed because the church today is hearing about increasing with goods, prosperity, "blessings" and other worldly pursuits and desires?

Consider the words of Jesus in John 15:18-26, "If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first. If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you. Remember what I told you: A servant is not greater than his master. If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also. If they obeyed my teaching, they will obey yours also.

They will treat you this way because of my name, for they do not know the one who sent me. If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not be guilty of sin; but now they have no excuse for their sin. Whoever hates me hates my Father as well. If I had not done among them the works no one else did, they would not be guilty of sin. As it is, they have seen, and yet they have hated both me and my Father. But this is to fulfill what is written in their Law: ‘They hated me without reason. When the Holy Spirit comes, whom I will send to you from the Father—the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father—he will testify about me. And you also must testify, for you have been with me from the beginning."

Consider what Jesus told the poor church of Smyrna in Revelation 2:8-10, "And unto the angel of the church in Smyrna write; These things saith the first and the last, which was dead, and is alive; I know your works, and tribulation, and poverty, (but thou art rich) and I know the blasphemy of them which say they are Jews, and are not, but are the synagogue of Satan. Fear none of those things which thou shalt suffer: behold, the devil shall cast some of you into prison, that you may be tried; and you shall have tribulation ten days: be faithful unto death, and I will give you a crown of life."

Yet to the luke-warm church of the Laodiceans who was rich, He said in Revelation 3:14-22, "And to the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write; These things says the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of God; I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot: I would you were cold or hot. So then because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spew you out of my mouth.

Because you say, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and know not that thou are wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked: I counsel you to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that you may be rich; and white raiment, that you may be clothed, and that the shame of your nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that you may see. As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent.

Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me. To him that overcomes will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne. He that has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches."
