The Cats Have to Lose

“The Cats Have to Lose”
Philippians 2;1-11
December 3, 2017

Transformed by Christmas: responding to what God has given us in a way which fits the gift we have received

“If you've gotten anything at all out of following Christ, if his love has made any difference in your life, if being in a community of the Spirit means anything to you, if you have a heart, if you care–Then do me a favor: Agree with each other, love each other, be deep-spirited friends. Don't push your way to the front; don't sweet-talk your way to the top. Put yourself aside, and help others get ahead. Don't be obsessed with getting your own advantage. Forget yourselves long enough to lend a helping hand. Think of yourselves the way Christ Jesus thought of himself.”
“He had equal status with God but didn't think so much of himself that he had to cling to the advantages of that status no matter what. Not at all. When the time came, he set aside the privileges of deity and took on the status of a slave, became human! Having become human, he stayed human. It was an incredibly humbling process. He didn't claim special privileges. Instead, he lived a selfless, obedient life and then died a selfless, obedient death—and the worst kind of death at that: a crucifixion. Because of that obedience, God lifted him high and honored him far beyond anyone or anything, ever, so that all created beings in heaven and on earth—even those long ago dead and buried—will bow in worship before this Jesus Christ, and call out in praise that he is the Master of all, to the glorious honor of God the Father.”
-Philippians 2:1-11 (MSG)

We are to live for others in the same way Jesus lived for us.

Throughout the generations songs have been written trying to put into words our longing for a different kind of world.

As Jesus talks about this life we long for, He uses the language of the Kingdom of God.

“Once, having been asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come, Jesus replied, ‘The kingdom of God does not come with your careful observation, nor will people say, 'Here it is,' or 'There it is,' because the kingdom of God is within you.’"
-Luke 17:20-21

Philippians 2:1-11

Don’t just receive the gift, be the gift.

This life will not happen without resistence.

“Agree with each other, love each other, be deep-spirited friends.
-Philippians 2:2-4 (MSG)

“It’s not enough that the dogs succeed, the cats have to fail.”

This is not only the life lived by others, this is also the life lived by us as well.

The Parable of the Prodical Son
Luke 15:11-32

"The older brother became angry and refused to go in. So his father went out and pleaded with him. But he answered his father, 'Look! All these years I've been slaving for you and never disobeyed your orders. Yet you never gave me even a young goat so I could celebrate with my friends. But when this son of yours who has squandered your property with prostitutes comes home, you kill the fattened calf for him!'”
-Luke 15:28-30

I must recognize this attitude at work in me.

Luke 22:31-34

"Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.”
-Matthew 7:13-14

“It is for freedom that Christ has set us free.”
-Galatians 5:1

Choosing to walk the right path begins by recognizing that we are walking on the wrong path.
