The Hard Work of Putting Others First

"The Hard Work of Putting Others First"
1 Peter 2 and John 7
December 17, 2017

This year, instead of just celebrating Christmas, let's be changed by Christmas.

"If you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any fellowship with the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion..."
-Philippians 2:1

"Then make my joy complete by being like minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and purpose. Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others. Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus." -Philippians 2:2-5

"Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death even death on a cross!" -Philippians 2:5-11

We must learn to set aside the attitude of "I have to win and they have to lose."

"Husbands love your wives and , just as Christ loved the Church and gave Himself up for her." -Ephesians 5:25

"Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord." -Ephesians 5:22

"Children, obey your parents."
-Ephesians 6:1

"Parents, do not exasperate your children." -Ephesians 6:4

"Slaves [employees/students] obey your earthly masters with respect and fear, and with sincerity of heart just as you would obey Jesus."
-Ephesians 6:5

"And masters, treat your slaves in the same way." -Ephesians 6:9

Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus.

1. You will get hurt.

"Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death even death on a cross!" -Philippians 2:6-11

We treat others with grace and kindness because that is how Jesus treated/treats us.

I Peter 2:21-25

Jesus suffered in the process of putting others first.

We keep going and we don't give up. We entrust ourselves to God and continue to do what is right.

2. Don't be stupid.

John 7:1-27

Jesus acted with everyone's best interest in mind.

We are to act with wisdom.

Always check your motive.

Living with the same attitude that we find in Jesus is hard work, but it is good work.

"If you've gotten anything at all out of following Christ, if his love has made any difference in your life, if being in a community of the Spirit means anything to you, if you have a heart, if you care. Then do me a favor: Agree with each other, love each other, be deep spirited friends. Don't push your way to the front; don't sweet talk your way to the top. Put yourself aside, and help others get ahead. Don't be obsessed with getting your own advantage. Forget yourselves long enough to lend a helping hand. Think of yourselves the way Christ Jesus thought of himself."
-Philippians 2:1-5 (MSG)
