The Spiritual Discipline of Remembering

“The Spiritual Discipline of Remembering”
Mark 5:35-41
January 28, 2018

Jesus and the disciples were caught in a storm.
Mark 5:35-41

Jesus was teaching by the Sea of Galilee.

Jesus and the disciples get in a boat and Jesus lays down for a nap.

while on the sea a furious squall comes up.

The disciples were confident they were going to drown.

The disciples wake up Jesus.

Jesus says to the disciples: “Hwy are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?”

This might seem like an unfair question until we remember what happened in the days, weeks, and months before the storm.

Jesus wasn’t asking them to have faith without a foundation.

“In the future, when your children ask you, 'What do these stones mean?' tell them that the flow of the Jordan was cut off before the ark of the covenant of the Lord. When it crossed the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut off. These stones are to be a memorial to the people of Israel forever."
-Joshua 4:6-7

In the Old Testament, a pile of rocks was a way to remember.

In our long obedience in the same direction we meed to practice the spiritual discipline of remembering if we are going to survive the storms and keep going.

As I move forward, it is good to look back and remember God’s faithfulness and remember that there is no reason to be afraid.

I cannot let the storms distract me as I continue to live with the same attitude in me that I find in Jesus.
