What Does the True Church of Christ Look Like?

What Does the True Church of Christ Look Like?

2/26/2017

Malachi 3:3 - “Behold, I send My messenger, And he will prepare the way before Me. And the Lord, whom you seek, Will suddenly come to His temple, Even the Messenger of the covenant, In whom you delight. Behold, He is coming,” Says the Lord of hosts.

God's authority is granted to a people who are obedient to the gospel of Jesus Christ. As we see and hear in Acts Chapters 1-6, when people are commanded to repent, be baptized, and wait upon the promise of God in one accord, the Lord Jesus Christ will come and manifest Himself among those people.

And when the Lord Jesus Christ is among the people who are gathered in His name, who are free of idolatry, and repent of their own sins daily, then He has a sanctuary of living stones to come and dwell among. For 1 Peter 2:5 says, "You also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ."

And when Jesus comes to His Holy temple, His holy presence brings healing, deliverance, and salvation to the lost, the broken, the hurting, the lame, the blind, the deaf and mute, and the dead raised to life again.

Yet, as the true church of Christ, as we see in the book of Acts, we are to be manifesting the name of Jesus among the community and city we live, the gathering of saints we assemble with, and reaching out to the nations.

And like the apostles of God before us, if we are walking in obedience to the faith, even to the point of disregarding other people who regard things of men more than things of God's Spirit, then God's Spirit will be poured out in unusual ways such as the world has never seen before.

For Jesus says in Luke 12:32, “Fear not, little flock; for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom.” And Jesus also reminds us that greater works will be do because He went to the Father (John 14:12).

-----------------------------------------------------

AS THE TRUE CHURCH OF CHRIST, CONSIDER THIS EXHORTATION FROM ROMANS 12 TO ALL GOD'S SAINTS:

1Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. 2Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.

3For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you.

4For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, 5so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and EACH MEMBER BELONGS TO ALL THE OTHERS.

6We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us.

If YOUR GIFT is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith;

7if it is serving, then serve;

if it is teaching, then teach;

8if it is to encourage, then give encouragement;

if it is giving, then give generously;

if it is to lead, do it diligently;

if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully.

9Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. 10Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves. 11Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. 12Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. 13Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality.

14Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. 15Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn. 16Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position. Do not be conceited.

17Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everyone. 18If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. 19Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,” says the Lord. 20On the contrary: “If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink. In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head.”

21Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

-----------------------------------------------------

AND CONSIDER WE AS GOD'S PEOPLE WHO ARE GRACED WITH GOD'S SPIRIT AND MOVE IN CONJUNCTION WITH HIS SPIRIT, AS I Corinthians 12:

1Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I do not want you to be ignorant: 2You know that you were Gentiles, carried away to these dumb idols, however you were led. 3Therefore I make known to you that no one speaking by the Spirit of God calls Jesus accursed, and no one can say that Jesus is Lord except by the Holy Spirit.

4There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. 5There are differences of ministries, but the same Lord. 6And there are diversities of activities, but it is the same God who works all in all.

7But the MANIFESTATION OF THE SPIRIT is GIVEN TO EACH ONE for the PROFIT OF ALL:

8for to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit,

9to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healings by the same Spirit,

10to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy,

to another discerning of spirits,

to another different kinds of tongues,

to another the interpretation of tongues.

11But one and the same SPIRIT WORKS ALL THESE THINGS, DISTRIBUTING TO EACH ONE INDIVIDUALLY AS WE WILLS.

12For as the body is one and has many members, but all the members of that one body, being many, are one body, so also is Christ. 13For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free—and have all been made to drink into one Spirit. 14For in fact the body is not one member but many.

15If the foot should say, “Because I am not a hand, I am not of the body,” is it therefore not of the body? 16And if the ear should say, “Because I am not an eye, I am not of the body,” is it therefore not of the body? 17If the whole body were an eye, where would be the hearing? If the whole were hearing, where would be the smelling?

18But now GOD HAS SET THE MEMBERS, EACH ONE OF THEM, IN THE BODY JUST AS HE PLEASED.

19And if they were all one member, where would the body be?

20But now indeed there are many members, yet one body. 21And the eye cannot say to the hand, “I have no need of you”; nor again the head to the feet, “I have no need of you.” 22No, much rather, those members of the body which seem to be weaker ARE NECESSARY.

23And those members of the body which we think to be less honorable, on these we bestow greater honor; and our unpresentable parts have greater modesty, 24but our presentable parts have no need. But God composed the body, having GIVEN GREATER HONOR TO THAT PART WHICH LACKS IT, 25that there should be no schism in the body, but that the MEMBERS SHOULD HAVE THE SAME CARE FOR ONE ANOTHER.

26And if one member suffers, all the members suffer with it; or if one member is honored, all the members rejoice with it.

27Now YOU ARE THE BODY OF CHRIST, AND MEMBERS INDIVIDUALLY.

28And God has appointed these in the church: first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, administrations, varieties of tongues.

29Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Are all workers of miracles? 30Do all have gifts of healings? Do all speak with tongues? Do all interpret?

31But earnestly desire the best gifts. And yet I show you a more excellent way.

-----------------------------------------------------

JUST TO BE REMINDED OF GOD'S PURPOSES IN THE HOUSE OF GOD, AS EXPLAINED I CORINTHIANS 14:

1Pursue love, and desire spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy. 2For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries. 3But HE WHO PROPHESIES SPEAKS EDIFICATION AND EXHORTATION AND COMFORT TO MEN.

4He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church. 5I wish you all spoke with tongues, but even more that you prophesied; for he who prophesies is greater than he who speaks with tongues, unless indeed he interprets, that the THE CHURCH MAY RECEIVE EDIFICATION.

6But now, brethren, if I come to you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you unless I speak to you either by revelation, by knowledge, by prophesying, or by teaching? 7Even things without life, whether flute or harp, when they make a sound, unless they make a distinction in the sounds, how will it be known what is piped or played? 8For if the trumpet makes an uncertain sound, who will prepare for battle? 9So likewise you, unless you utter by the tongue words easy to understand, how will it be known what is spoken? For you will be speaking into the air. 10There are, it may be, so many kinds of languages in the world, and none of them is without significance. 11Therefore, if I do not know the meaning of the language, I shall be a foreigner to him who speaks, and he who speaks will be a foreigner to me.

12Even so you, SINCE YOU ARE ZEALOUS FOR SPIRITUAL FITS, LET IT BE FOR THE EDIFICATION OF THE CHURCH THAT YOU SEEK TO EXCEL.

13Therefore let him who speaks in a tongue pray that he may interpret. 14For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my understanding is unfruitful. 15What is the conclusion then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will also pray with the understanding. I will sing with the spirit, and I will also sing with the understanding. 16Otherwise, if you bless with the spirit, how will he who occupies the place of the uninformed say “Amen” at your giving of thanks, since he does not understand what you say? 17For you indeed give thanks well, but the other is not edified.

18I thank my God I speak with tongues more than you all; 19yet in the church I would rather speak five words with my understanding, that I may teach others also, than ten thousand words in a tongue.

20Brethren, do not be children in understanding; however, in malice be babes, but in understanding be mature.

21In the law it is written: “With men of other tongues and other lips I will speak to this people; And yet, for all that, they will not hear Me,” says the Lord. 22Therefore tongues are for a sign, not to those who believe but to unbelievers; but prophesying is not for unbelievers but for those who believe.

23Therefore if the whole church comes together in one place, and all speak with tongues, and there come in those who are uninformed or unbelievers, will they not say that you are out of your mind?

24But IF ALL PROPHESY, and an unbeliever or an uninformed person comes in, HE IS CONVINCED BY ALL, AND HE IS CONVICTED BY ALL. 25And thus the secrets of his heart are revealed; and so, falling down on his face, HE WILL WORSHIP GOD AND REPORT THAT GOD IS TRULY AMONG YOU.

26How is it then, brethren? Whenever you come together, EACH OF YOU HAS A PSALM, HAS A TEACHING, HAS A TONGUE, HAS A REVELATION, HAS AN INTERPRETATION. LET ALL THINGS BE DONE FOR EDIFICATION.

27If anyone speaks in a tongue, let there be two or at the most three, each in turn, and let one interpret. 28But if there is no interpreter, let him keep silent in church, and let him speak to himself and to God. 29Let two or three prophets speak, and let the others judge.

30But if anything is revealed to another who sits by, let the first keep silent. 31For you can all prophesy one by one, that ALL MAY LEARN AND ALL MAY BE ENCOURAGED. 32And the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets. 33For God is not the author of confusion but of peace, as in all the churches of the saints.

34Let your women keep silent in the churches, for they are not permitted to speak; but they are to be submissive, as the law also says. 35And if they want to learn something, let them ask their own husbands at home; for it is shameful for women to speak in church. 36Or did the word of God come originally from you? Or was it you only that it reached?

37If anyone thinks himself to be a prophet or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things which I write to you are the commandments of the Lord. 38But if anyone is ignorant, let him be ignorant.

39Therefore, brethren, DESIRE EARNESTLY TO PROPHESY, AND DO NOT FORBID TO SPEAK WITH TONGUES. LET ALL THINGS BE DONE DECENTLY AND IN ORDER.

-----------------------------------------------------

AND ONE LAST FINAL REMINDER, as HEBREWS 10:24-25 says,

24And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works: 25Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as you see the day approaching.
